Abstract

Watermelon is a fruit crop harvested within a single growing season in lowland areas. This study aimed to determine the effect of fruit pruning in order to provide the best recommendations for watermelon cultivation techniques across different varieties. The research focused on how fruit pruning influences agronomic parameters and fruit quality. A factorial experiment was conducted using a Strip Plot Design with two factors: watermelon varieties and four levels of pruning (no pruning, retaining 3, 2, or 1 fruit per plant). The results showed that pruning by retaining only one fruit per plant (G3) significantly increased fruit length, circumference, fresh weight, total weight per plant, and flesh thickness, while reducing seed count. It is concluded that fruit pruning can optimally allocate photosynthates to the retained fruit, thereby enhancing fruit quality and plant productivity. This technique is recommended as an effective agronomic practice to maximize watermelon yield and quality.
