Abstract

The tendency toward Islamic spirituality, particularly Sufism—whether formally institutionalized in the form of tarekat or practiced informally—continues to persist in both rural and urban settings. This persistence is largely driven by a growing disillusionment with hedonistic lifestyles and an inner emptiness arising from the lack of transcendental engagement, thereby strengthening the demand for spiritual fulfillment. In Indonesia, a developing country characterized by religious plurality and cultural diversity, spirituality has retained its significance across different religious communities. Islam, as a revealed religion, operates alongside culture, which is the product of human intellect, creativity, and imagination, eventually evolving into civilization. While both religion and culture have historically guided humanity, globalization introduces new challenges that shift their roles and relevance. Islam, with its universal principles as a “rahmatan lil ‘alamin,” provides values of justice, equality, tolerance, and harmony, offering solutions to both global and local challenges. This article employs a qualitative, interpretative approach to analyze the interrelation between Sufism and cultural acculturation, highlighting how Islamic spirituality interacts with local wisdom in addressing contemporary issues. The findings indicate that the integrative relationship between Sufism and culture not only preserves religious values but also reinforces cultural resilience, thereby fostering harmony and contributing to the development of holistic education in a pluralistic society.
